Material Safety

This page explains the material vocabulary used on this store, what we mean by it, and where the limit of our statements sits. It is written to be read alongside the specification on each listing rather than instead of it.

Body-safe and medical-grade silicone

Where a listing describes a material as body-safe silicone or medical-grade silicone, that is a general description of the material class, using the wording the trade uses for a non-porous, platinum-cured silicone surface that is smooth, inert and easy to wash. It is a description of type, not a certificate. We do not claim a specific certification, standard number, approval or test result for any item on this store, and we do not quote one second-hand.

If you need the maker’s documentation for a specific item, email the support address with the product name before ordering and we will ask the maker to supply it.

Phthalate-free

Listings that state an item is phthalate-free mean that the maker has confirmed the material is formulated without phthalates as plasticisers. It is a statement about the formulation, not a certification, and it applies to the material named on that listing rather than to everything in the cart. Where the maker has not confirmed it, the listing will not carry the claim.

Cleaner compatibility

• Water-based, fragrance-free cleaners are compatible with silicone and with the food-grade silicone components of our care items.
• Alcohol, acetone, bleach, abrasives and oil-based products are not compatible with silicone; the reasons are set out in what not to use on silicone.
• Wipe-clean textiles on our storage bag tolerate a damp cloth and mild soap, and nothing stronger.
• Beech and wooden parts are wiped, not soaked, and are not dishwasher safe.

Inspection and ageing

Silicone is not a forever material. Check the surface every few months for tackiness, cloudiness, pitting, cracking along a seam or a housing that no longer sits flush. Wash residue and dust away, dry the item fully and look again before storing it. An item showing surface breakdown should be retired rather than cleaned harder.

California Proposition 65

Any warning required under California’s Proposition 65 depends on a chemical-by-chemical assessment for each item, and this store does not make that assessment itself. The position for any listing must be supplied or approved by the operator before this store accepts live orders. Until then, no listing here claims to be Prop 65 compliant or non-compliant. What we do not claim

We make no health, medical or therapeutic claims for any item on this store, and none of the material wording here should be read as one. Cleaning your items is ordinary upkeep, described on this site in the plain terms of wash, rinse, dry and store. If a claim is not on the specification, it is not being made.
